We are part of...The Dominican Family

There are a variety ways of being a part of the life and tradition of the Order of Preachers. Did you know there are Dominican sisters, priests, and brothers, but also associates, Dominican laity, and contemplative Dominican nuns?  Here is a quick guide to the varieties of life in the Dominican family.

The Order was founded in 1216 by a Spaniard named Dominic de Guzman. For nearly 800 years, those who have joined themselves to the mission of Preaching the Gospel as members of the Order of Preachers have adapted their vocation to the age in which they live. When we speak of Dominican Family, we mean all of the men and women who are committed to the preaching life as followers of Dominic, in each of its forms. There are about 13,000 Dominicans in the U.S., about 114,000 worldwide.

Dominican Nuns
It could be argued that it was the nun’s branch of the order that was the first established. When Bishop Diego, an early companion of Dominic’s, realized that Catholic families were entrusting their daughters to the care of the heretical sects that had sprung up in France, he acquired an abandoned church at Prouille and turned it into a monastery for converts from these sects. The monastery was in operation by 1206. It quickly became the locus of prayer for the success of the preaching mission and the center for the itinerant preaching friars. There are now about 4,000 Dominican nuns worldwide living in 234 Dominican monasteries, about 17 of which are in the United States. In keeping with the ancient tradition of the order, the nuns live a life of contemplation and silence.
