| Dominican Friars (priests and brothers)
The pope officially recognized St. Dominic’s request to establish an “Order of Preachers” in 1216. All Dominican Friars vow obedience to God under the rule and constitutions of the order, which includes the traditional vows of chastity and poverty. The friars are a worldwide congregation, under the leadership of the Master of the Order, and organized by provinces and regions. There are four provinces of Dominican Friars in the United States.
