It is always Christ who sends. But whom does he send? You, young people, are the ones he looks upon with love. Christ, who says, 'Follow me,' wants you to live your lives with a sense of vocation. The search and discovery of God's will for you is a deep and fascinating endeavor. Every vocation, every path to which Christ calls us, ultimately leads to fulfillment and happiness, because it leads to God, to sharing in God's own life." (Pope John Paul II, Manila, Philippines, Jan. 13, 1996)
Is religious life for you?
This is an important question. The answer might be yes! But before you know that for sure, it is important to understand that no matter what the answer is, if you are a baptized Christian you are still, always, and irrevocably called by God.
That is true! Each person who is baptized is loved and called by God to be a co-creator of God’s Kingdom on this earth. God calls us to be lovers! When we find ourselves loved by our God, we choose our thoughts, words, and actions in a way that nurtures an environment where the Good News of Jesus Christ might be lived.
This call is not unique to sisters, brothers, and priests. It belongs to everyone who is a baptized Christian. No matter who you are or what you do for a living, you are already called to respond to God’s call, just like Jesus did when he heard the word of the prophet Isaiah calling him “to bring glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free and to proclaim grace from the Lord.” (Luke 4: 18)
Every Christian’s life is meant to be a response to this one baptismal call.
As Christian’s mature, we begin to seek the particular way in which we are called to be co-creators of the Kingdom of God. Many people respond to this particular call to love as Jesus loves by being married. Others choose to love as Jesus loves as a lay, single adult in the church. Still others respond to the call to love as Jesus loves by becoming a sister, a nun, a brother or a priest. What are you being called to be?
