Elizabeth was just 17 years old when she threw in her lot with the Kentucky Dominicans and became Sister Thomasina. Three years later she was on her way to Illinois. Her innate ability to hear the concerns of others gained her the reputation as a trusted confidant for many. Her sense of organization made possible the rapid growth of the community. During her nine years as the leader of the congregation she built the chapel, auditorium, and high school that became the cornerstones of the community’s life and mission for generations.

Sister Thomasina’s gift of organizational leadership lives on in the Dominican Sisters of Springfield Illinois. Does it live in you?

Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, OP

Sister Thomasina is one of the founding members of our congregation who inspires me to listen to God’s call in my life, both through the voice of others and prayerful reflection on situations. As a high school principal, I often find myself making decisions for our students, faculty, and families. It was in listening attentively to God and others that Sister Thomasina found her answers. It is also where I strive to find mine. When I’m in the midst of motivating our students toward a common goal or planning future projects with faculty and parents, I count on Sister Thomasina’s intercession and pray that the seeds she planted for our Dominican mission are bearing fruit today!

Sister Kathleen Anne is the principal of Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Ill.
